This is the 1st episode of Real Story, as a start, I would like to share Susan’s story with you. Susan told me her experience when she was taking my English training three years ago.

My parents and I lived in an attic room of 8 square meters for 15 years in Shanghai. I was born there. I was generally happy in my whole childhood, though our home was very stuffy and hot when raining. I remember the most my mom said was how sorry she felt for not giving me a bigger place to live in. When I went to college, my parents decided to buy a bigger home after years’ of savings. At that time I started to be interested in housing loans and banking, and how banks help those people like us with a better home. Then  I was chosen to work in the famous Singaporean bank in Shanghai right after college, I felt lucky. During that year of working, I learnt so much about housing loans and how banking business works.

One day in 2010, I read a story from a newspaper: a mother sat at the door of Shanghai housing trade center, crying, because she couldn’t afford an apartment for her son’s marriage. I was deeply impressed by the picture as I could feel how helpless she was with my own experience. And I had more questions about why the housing price was so high and how to meet these people’s demand. With so many questions in my mind, I worked as a project manager two years after I was in a famous department store in Shanghai. My job was to work with the local government to move the people in the poor areas to a new community, by offering them new apartments. There were 3966 families living in the poor areas, my job was really tough, but exciting, because I could make a difference now. Within 4 years, all those people moved to better and cleaner homes, including a family of 8 who lived in a room of 10 square meters.

I always believe one can change the world with his little power, no matter how little it is.

Susan was awarded manager of the year in 2014 in Shanghai. She went to Canada for further study 2 years ago, hoping to help more people after she graduates.

Susan works now as a consultant of a bank in Canada, she graduated from the IVEY Business school at Western University last year. I wanted to write about Susan 2 years ago, but at that time I didn’t come up with this podcast idea yet, and when I was ready to write, I suddenly had no idea what to write about her, because from her experience, I thought of dreams, effort and passion.
